An intensive 32-hour training for attorneys to learn and enhance the skills necessary to guide divorcing couples to a mutually satisfactory and legally binding settlement agreement.

Meals are included in the tuition for this training.

Participants must be licensed attorneys who have been in practice for at least two years, at least some of which is in family law. Attendance at all sessions is essential because of the participatory nature of the course.

This is a practical, skills-based training involving demonstrations, role-plays and other active learning exercises. Topics covered include:

Conflict styles, conflict management, and mediation models; negotiation theory; active listening, reframing, and other interventions; mediation ethics and cultural competence; recognizing and power imbalances; including domestic violence; stages of mediation; unique characteristics of divorce mediation; drafting settlement agreements, including parenting agreements and working with consultants.

Continuing Legal Education Credits:

32 Hours MCLE credits for Attorneys including 2 hours of Ethics and 2 hours of Elimination of Bias and 32 Hours including 2 hours of Ethics and 2 hours of Elimination of Bias  Family Law Specialization Credits

The Monterey County Bar Association certifies that this program conforms to the standards for approved education activities prescribed by the rules and regulations of the State Bar of California governing minimum continuing legal education.

Legal Specialization Credit (Family Law): 24 hours in the area of dissolution marriage or mediation and negotiation of family law disputes; 1 hour in the area of custody of children, including advice or evaluation and custody mediation; 1 hour in the area of child support, and spousal support; 2 hours in the area of division of community property, confirmation of separate property or taxation issues incident to dissolution of marriage; 1 hour in the area of legal issues relating to domestic violence; 1 hour in the area of law office management of a family law practice.

Tuition & Registration Information:

$1,650 per person for Members of MCBA, SCCBA and SLOBA

$1,750 per person for non-members

Save $100 for Early Bird Registration by May 18, 2016.

Save an additional $100 per person for two or more attorneys from the same firm.

$250 Refund post training for attorneys who agree to serve on the divorce mediation panel for the Lawyer Referral Service Coalition of Monterey County.
