HISTORY OF THE FOUNDATION
Share |

The Monterey County Bar Foundation was formed as a non-profit corporation in 1993, in response to a generous offer from local attorney and philanthropist David Sabih, Esq. Mr. Sabih offered to make a gift of funds from a contingency fee win to support justice in Monterey County. He offered the gift to the Monterey County Bar Association, but it could not accept a charitable donation because it is a non-profit professional association and not a charitable entity.

Members of the bar association’s leadership acted quickly to create the Monterey County Bar Foundation, Inc., with the Honorable Susan M. Dauphine serving as the Incorporator. The original Board included the Hon. Susan M. Dauphine, Luis C. Jaramillo, Frank Hespe, the Hon. Albert H. Maldonado, Gwendolyn S. Buck, Ralph W. Thompson III, Thomas P. Bohnen, and Mary M. Grier. The foundation has gained momentum over time through a strong relationship with MCBA, energized commitment to support access to justice, and a focused strategic plan.
